This is a wonderful, tight, yet flexible weave pattern for a washcloth. This pattern allows for lots of movement and flexibility while maintaining its shape and structure. Plus the weave allows soap to lather beautifully!
This washcloth can be washed with other clothes and towels, dried in the dryer and reused for as long as you want! Be aware that cotton fiber will bleed if dyed so make sure to avoid washing a bright washcloth with whites!
I have been rewashing the same washcloth for over 4 years now! I never worry about bacteria buildup or a stinky washcloth!
Tools Needed:
-Yarn: #4 Worsted Weight Medium Yarn
Preferably cotton but could use mixed fiber or acrylic yarn (something sturdy, not too soft or light weight as it will break down faster when washed)
-Crochet Hook: US H(5mm)
-Tapestry needle(darning needle)
-Scissors
Chain 24*
(you can adjust the size of the washcloth by adding or subtracting stitches in increments of 2) I sometimes will switch between 26 and 22 chain stitches to start depending on the type of cotton yarn I am using.
Row 1: In second chain from hook single crochet, chain 1, skip the next stitch, *single crochet in the next stitch, chain 1, skip a stitch,* repeat * until you come to the end of the row, turn.
Should have 12 single crochets for a 24 chain, 11 single crochet for a 22 chain, and 13 single crochet stitches for a 26 chain with a chain stitch in between each single crochet (except at beginning and end of row)
Row 2: Chain 2, single crochet in second chain from hook (should be the chain 1 space from previous row), *chain 1, single crochet in chain 1 space from previous row* repeat * till end of row, turn
Rows 3+ repeat row 2 until your washcloth is a square. Finish the washcloth by tying off the ends and weaving them in the washcloth with a tapestry needle.
I like to wrap the washcloth up and use a little string to tie into a bow. These make great stocking stuffers and additions to gift baskets.
